There’s something wonderfully distinctive about a Sphynx cat. And Merv, who turns three next month, is no exception.
Although the name suggests ancient Egypt, the modern Sphynx breed actually originated in Canada in the 1960s, following a natural genetic mutation that resulted in hairlessness.

Since then, the breed has become known not just for its striking appearance, but for its affectionate, people-focused nature. They are intelligent, expressive, and full of character, all traits that make them a joy (and occasionally a challenge!) to photograph.
Merv was born in Birmingham but now lives a very happy life in Eastham on the Wirral, where his owners absolutely adore him. From the moment I arrived for his cat photography session, it was clear he was going to be a fun cat to photograph.
And then there’s his slightly unusual taste in food.

When he was younger, Lewis brought home a cheeseburger from McDonald's and left it unattended for just a moment. That was all Merv needed to discover what is now his greatest love in life. Ever since, cheeseburgers have become part of his story and every birthday, he celebrates with his very own cheeseburger, complete with a candles. It’s safe to say this was a first for me during a Wirral cat photography session.

Photographing Merv was enormous fun, but definitely energetic. As
a house cat, our session was entirely indoors, which meant working creatively with natural light and space. Sphynx cats are famously agile and fast, and Merv was no exception, capturing those elegant, still portraits in between lightning-speed leaps across the furniture required patience, timing and quick reflexes.
But this is exactly why I love photographing cats in their own homes across the Wirral. Real personality shines through when they’re relaxed in familiar surroundings. Whether it’s a quiet, regal pose or a mid-air jump, professional cat photography should reflect who they truly are, quirks, wrinkles and cheeseburger traditions included.

Every cat has their own story. Merv’s just happens to come with a candle in a cheeseburger.
