I don't trust anyone who doesn't like animals, but I totally trust an animal who doesn't like a person.

A Life of Care and Observation
Hello, I’m John McCulloch, the owner of Wirral Pet Photograpgy based in Prenton, Wirral.
For the last 28 years, I’ve had the honor of being an award-winning wedding and portrait photographer here in Wirral. I’ve spent decades capturing life’s biggest human milestones, but I am now dedicating my time and expertise to my true passion: pet photography.
A life shaped by animals
Our home has always been filled with animals, and all the noise, routines, and compromises that come with them. Today, my beautiful wife Julie and I share our lives with our four dogs, three Miniature Dachshunds and a black Labrador. Like anyone who truly lives with animals, our daily routine is shaped entirely around them.
Dogs have been part of my world since my early twenties. Living so closely with them for decades has taught me how to recognise trust, read subtle behaviors, and, most importantly, respect their individuality. My experience extends beyond dogs, too. Julie once lived with five cats (all at once!), and I’ve owned and cared for horses myself. That kind of experience teaches you patience and quiet communication in a way few other things can.
Combining care with expertise
Before photography became my life, my professional world was centered around care. I trained as a nurse within the NHS and later served for 16 years as a nurse in the Royal Air Force, eventually retiring at the rank of Squadron Leader.
That background in nursing and service gave me a foundation of discipline and empathy, but it also taught me how to stay calm and observant, skills that are surprisingly vital when you’re trying to capture the perfect portrait of a spirited horse or a shy dog.
More than just a photograph
About nine years ago, our love for our first Dachshund led us into professional dog care. We ran a council-registered boarding facility and later became Kennel Club registered breeders. As our own pack grew, I qualified as a dog trainer to deepen my understanding of how animals communicate and behave.
Pet photography brings all of this together for me. It isn’t about making an animal "perform." It’s about creating a calm, unhurried space where their character can emerge naturally.
Our animals are only with us for part of our lives, but to them, we are their whole world.
My mission is simple:
To present the opportunity for every pet owner to capture a timeless portrait of their soulmate before they leave us.
Our companions are with us for such a short time, but a soulful professional portrait keeps their spirit in our homes forever. I don’t just take pictures; I create the one image you’ll hold onto when they are no longer by your side.
John
